TODAY, June 29th, the full House will consider H.R. 3003, the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act, which punitively withholds federal funding for cities with community trust policies in place. They will also consider H.R. 3004, Kate’s Law, which would expand the federal government’s ability to prosecute individuals for “illegal reentry” and impose even more severe penalties in these cases – even though more than 50% of all federal prosecutions are already for immigration offenses. Such proposals would target more than 600+ cities, counties, and states and reverse years of intentional, community-based policing efforts that are vital to public safety in neighborhoods across the country. As the House considers legislation that would coerce local police to serve as immigration enforcement officers, RIGHT NOW is a critical time to call your Member of Congress and urge them to stop conflating the actions of one person with an entire community of our immigrant brothers and sisters.
Call Your Representative: (202) 224-3121 Tell Them to Vote NO on H.R. 3003 and H.R. 3004! Please call 3 times to connect with your 1 Representative and your 2 Senators.
Here’s what you can say: “I’m a constituent from [City/State] and I urge the Representative to OPPOSE H.R. 3003, the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act, and H.R. 3004, Kate’s Law. Together, this legislation punitively withholds federal funding for cities with community trust policies in place, while unnecessarily expanding prosecutions of individuals for “illegal reentry” and imposing even more severe penalties in these cases. These kinds of proposals reduce community trust in local police, encourage racial profiling, and victims or witnesses of crimes from coming forward. As a person of faith, I expect the Representative to stand with our communities and against politicians who want to separate immigrant families and spread fear using our tax dollars. I stand with my immigrant neighbors and urge you to vote NO on H.R. 3003 and H.R. 3004.” When all individuals can report dangerous situations and seek protection from violence without the fear of being deported and separated from their families, safety increases for everyone. What we need are inclusive policies that respect the efforts of local law enforcement to build trust and protect all members of our communities.
