Washington, D.C. — A fifth child from Guatemala died this week after journeying to our nation’s border and asking for protection. Today, we also learned that a ten year-old girl from El Salvador died in 2018 while under the care of the U.S. government. Her death had not been previously disclosed.

On Thursday, May 23rd at 9am, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) will join diverse faith leaders in a prayer vigil for Carlos, Jakelin, Felipe, Juan, Wilmer, and all others who have been harmed by our leaders’ inhumane actions.

Thursday is also the one-year anniversary of the killing of Claudia Patricia Gómez González, a 20-year-old woman who was shot in the head by a Border Patrol agent while also seeking safety in the United States. Juanita Cabrera Lopez, Executive Director of the Mayan League, will share a message from Claudia Gomez’ family and other reflections during the vigil.

For those outside of DC, you can join virtually by posting on the wall here

The Capitol Hill vigil takes place head of Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan’s appearance before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs at 9:30, where he will once again demand more money to further militarize the border and restrict access to asylum. Instead of this increase in aggression at our border, people of faith are demanding justice, accountability, and compassion from our leaders in Washington.
