IIC’s Adams Responds to Trump Remarks About Somali Refugees

“As people of faith we are called to radical, inclusive, extravagant love for our neighbor; and that’s what the refugee resettlement program means to us”

Washington, DC – At a rally in Minnesota last night, President Trump denigrated refugees from Somalia and bragged about slashing the refugee resettlement program by 85%. He also attacked Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), calling her a “disgrace to our country.”

Katie Adams, Domestic Policy Advocate for the United Church of Christ and Co-Chair of the Interfaith Immigration Coalition, said:

The President’s remarks about Rep. Omar and Somali-Americans are vile and racist. We condemn these words and know that millions of Americans of diverse faiths and backgrounds do too. To be clear, myriad faith communities stand ready, willing, and able to welcome refugees. The false narrative being perpetrated by the President that our welcome is closed is not representative of those many voices. As people of faith we are called to radical, inclusive, extravagant love for our neighbor; and that’s what the refugee resettlement program means to us. We will not let this President succeed in making America hate again.

The Interfaith Immigration Coalition is made up of 53 national, faith-based organizations brought together across many theological traditions with a common call to seek just policies that lift up the God-given dignity of every individual. In partnership, we work to protect the rights, dignity, and safety of all refugees and migrants.
