Summer Advocacy Action List

Congress has an historic opportunity to pass citizenship for immigrants through the congressional budget reconciliation process this year. On August 11, we celebrated an important step that the Senate passed a budget resolution that includes a path to citizenship. We must keep up the momentum! While Congress is in recess and into September, faith communities must make their voices heard.

Below, find resources to take action including action alerts to email or call your Members of Congress, sample social media, talking points, a guide to set up virtual meetings with Congress, sample op-eds, prayers, and much more! Join us to take action this congressional recess for citizenship, asylum, detention, and refugee admissions.

Citizenship

  • We had the first of our August Mondays “Prayers for Citizenship” virtual gatherings on Aug. 9. Watch the recording here, help promote and register for the remaining gatherings (8/16, 23, & 30), and uplift the prayers and actions using this toolkit
  • Engage with your legislators and lift your voices this month in support of citizenship using this IIC summer recess toolkit
  • Using this action alert from Sojourner’s, call to urge your legislators to support a path to citizenship through the budget reconciliation process.

Asylum

Detention

  • As Congress negotiates the federal budget, Defund Hate invites you to join a National Day of Advocacy on August 18 to meet with Members of Congress to demand cuts to harmful detention and deportation systems. Register Here.

Refugee Admissions

  • Register for a panel discussion on Friday, August 13, from 11am-12pm ET to learn more about the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and how you can advocate for the safe resettlement of our Afghan allies and their families.
  • Register here to join CWS and Veterans For American Ideals on Wednesday, August 18th at 12:00 pm ET to hear from a U.S. veteran and Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) recipients about why we need the administration to act now to evacuate all of our allies and their families to U.S. territory.
  • Take action this Refugee Community Advocacy Month, Aug. 7 – Sept. 20. Urge the administration to set a refugee admissions goal of 125,000, and tell Congress to demand expanded access to the USRAP for Afghan refugees. Urge your state and local elected leaders to sign on in support of a robust refugee admissions goal using this toolkit.
